Petit fours (little iced cakes that are also fondly known as “fondant fancies”) make a classic bridal shower treat. But that’s just the beginning. Petit fours are coming to the foreground, if you’ll excuse the pun, of all types of parties and get-togethers. Set out a platter at an open house, and watch the smiles appear while the little cakes disappear.
While many of us admire the sweet charm and elegance of petit fours, we’re deterred from trying our hand at making petit fours ourselves. It’s rather humorous to imagine being intimidated by such tiny pieces of cake, yet the paradox is this: The tininess is exactly what intimidates. The petit fours appear too fancy, with too much intricate detail. Surely baking and cutting such precise squares of cake, then icing and decorating each one, must be difficult and time consuming.
The truth is, making petit fours may be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be. The process can even be fun! Planning and organizing is key to the process. Of course, a good recipe helps—and that’s where we come in!
Typically, petit fours are made of almond flavored cake, but you’ll find recipes here for almost any flavor imaginable. And if you consider the fact that you can mix and match the glazes and toppings, you’ll surely be creating mini masterpieces of diverse deliciousness!
Note: “Petit Four” is often misspelled as “petite four” or “petit fore” or “petite fore.”
